Michael Berryhill at Kansas Gallery
What comes after stasis? Writing about Michael Berryhill’s work in 2010, Sharon Butler observed a trend of “contingency and ennui” in painting, predicting that “struggle and tenacity” would follow. That bend has arrived in Berryhill’s show at Kansas Gallery (which closed on June 23rd), a series of paintings which, in itself, blossoms.

Michael Bauer at Lisa Cooley
Though he just moved to New York from Berlin, Michael Bauer's paintings have a thrifty quality that's native to the Lower East Side. Bauer is not exactly sparing with material, but he conveys a raggedy feeling through dull palette, erasure on canvas, and focused use of a tiny brush. The effect is a highly-detailed fog. Only rubbery silhouettes of heads and limbs identify these as tangles of elastic figures. - Whitney Kimball, NYC Contributor

New American Paintings visits Frieze and NADA
I had the opportunity to take a quick trip down to New York for the art fairs this past weekend. You would think that gallerists and collectors alike would have had their fill with the Armory Show and a number of smaller fairs having just taken place in early March, but there was no evidence of fatigue.

Fountain, Volta, Independent
Our guest blogger Joshua Field was busy this weekend. In addition to the Armory and Scope (click for previous post), he made it to Fountain, Volta, and the Independent. After the jump, check out some works he was admiring at the remaining three fairs. Be sure to keep checking in over the next few days to see more from our other guest blogger, Lee Gainer, and our own New American Paintings staff.

Armory and Scope: Joshua Field Checks In
We heard earlier from Lee Grainer at the Armory and Scope. Now it's Joshua Field's turn to share what caught his eye while at the fairs. Joshua is our second guest photo blogger helping us cover the fairs in New York City. We are excited to have another painter share their perspective and favorite pieces while observing the large gathering of contemporary galleries and artists in Big Apple. When I asked Joshua to share his thoughts thus far, he offered the following:

Robert Buck at CRG: This American Graveyard
A horned cow skull on a nine-foot-tall cement totem looms in the entrance of CRG Gallery. As all of the works in Robert Buck’s show Kahpenakwu (“west” in Comanche), of paintings, drawings, and large sculpture, it serves as a tombstone for Native America, transforming the gallery into an industrial wasteland.
