Curator Watch List: Anne Ellegood

We are currently putting together the Pacific Coast issue (NAP #97). Anne Ellegood, Senior Curator, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, did a terrific job selected 40 artists from over 1,000 that applied to the competition. You'll have to wait to find out who she selected from the region. But, when we asked her what other painters she would recommend to our readers, she names quite a few. So, check them out after the jump! And look for the Pacific Coast issue on the newsstands in December.

The Writing’s on the Wall: a Q&A with David Kramer

Considering current events, it may be easy to wonder if David Kramer’s paintings have a slight political bent. Much like the characters in his work, we’ve had to collectively reassess our own aspirations amid the failed promises of the credit and housing bubbles. But taking stock of one’s own life is far from a political act, and Kramer’s work is probably too introspective to be social activism.

Shea Hembrey's 100 Artist International Biennial (Video)

Ok, we are a little late in posting this video that was introduced in June. But it's too good and relevant to care about timing.

About the video, from the Ted website: "How do you stage an international art show with work from 100 different artists? If you're Shea Hembrey, you invent all of the artists and artwork yourself -- from large-scale outdoor installations to tiny paintings drawn with a single-haired brush. Watch this funny, mind-bending talk to see the explosion of creativity and diversity of skills a single artist is capable of."

We Have a Pulse

Pulse Contemporary Art Fair ran this past weekend in the heart of downtown LA—at LA Live.  Or at least we’re told LA Live is the “heart of the vibrant and burgeoning downtown Los Angeles community.”  As a native Angeleno, I certainly wouldn’t label LA Live the heart of downtown, nor would I label downtown Los Angeles a “burgeoning community” – because quite frankly, downtown LA has been a thriving and distinctive community for some time. - Ellen Caldwell, LA Contributor (more thoughts on the show and images after the jump!)

Absence as Catalyst for Social Change – William Cordova at Saltworks Gallery

William Cordova's (NAP MFA Annual 2003) recent show in Atlanta [Saltworks Gallery; September 16 – October 29, 2011] búscame en el torbellion: but also time itself is a complicated knotwork of imagery that potentially provides a rich discussion. - Read the full review by Atlanta Contributor, Paul Boshears, after the jump.
