14 Must-See Painting Shows: October 2012
Every month we publish our own list of "Must-See" Painting Shows list on the NAP/blog. Our publisher and editor, Steven Zevitas, combs through an extensive gallery list and simplifies things for you by recommending what he feels are the very best exhibitions to check out during the month.

Must See Painting Shows: October
More than three dozen New American Paintings’ alumni are on view throughout the country this month, including six past cover artists: Kirk Hayes, Shara Hughes, Michael Krueger, Devin Troy Strother, Elisa Johns and Kim McCarty, whose show at Morgan Lehman in New York opens in late October. You have until the end of this Saturday to see solo exhibitions by Ted Larsen in Philadelphia, Robert Kelly in Santa Fe, Gregory Euclide in Denver, and Marc Seguin, Mark Flood, and Erik Parker, all in New York City. Be sure to catch the just opened show of new paintings by Boston-native, Emily Eveleth, at Danese in New York.

12 Must-See Painting Shows: September 2012
There is still time in September to see what New American Paintings' Publisher/Editor, Steven Zevitas, considers the 12 must-see painting shows of September. After the jump you can find his brief article originally posted on the Huffington Post. And don't forget we posted a full list of must-see shows for the September earlier this month on the blog!

Must See Painting Shows: September
It is September and the art world has come back to life. Commercial galleries around the country are busy putting final touches on soon to open exhibitions. Not surprisingly, many are opening their seasons with shows by significant artists. In New York, Gerhard Richter and James Rosenquist open next week at Marian Goodman and Acquavella Galleries, respectively. In Chicago, original Hairy Who member Gladys Nilsson presents new work at Jean Albano Gallery. All the way across the country in Los Angeles, be sure to catch an exhibition of recent work by Jim Dine at Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art that has already opened.

Must See Paintings Shows: July/August
The heat has been turned way up on the East Cost, which is all the more reason to duck into a few galleries as you trudge through the city. As is typical for the summer months, a lot of galleries have mounted group exhibitions, and many of them focus on painting.

Must See Painting Shows: June
Summer is upon us. As is typical, many galleries around the country are mounting group exhibitions. There are a surprising number of first-rate solo exhibitions on view, many of which stretch into July. I am happy to see more than two-dozen New American Paintings’ alumni in the mix, including Todd Chilton at Feature, Inc. in New York City, who will be the cover artist for Issue #101.
In a coast to coast face off of contemporary masters, be sure not to miss Brice Marden’s elegant show at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York and Wayne Thiebaud’s exhibition at John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco. For many, Marden is the greatest living abstractionist and Thiebaud the greatest living painter of objects.

Must See Painting Shows: May
May is traditionally the last month of the art world “season.” As summer looms, rhythms change and many galleries choose to mount group exhibitions instead of solo shows. It makes sense, after all, why try to promote an individual’s work when your clients are scattered to various vacation spots around the world? Fortunately, many galleries are ending the season with a bang and presenting A-level solo shows by artists of all career points.

Must See Painting Shows: April
More than twenty alumni of New American Paintings are featured in exhibitions around the country this month. If you live in New York City, be sure to catch Franklin Evans' exhibition at Sue Scott Gallery. Evans continues to push the medium of painting in a way that blurs the line between painting, sculpture and installation. In San Francisco, Kate Shepherd is currently on view at Anthony Meier Fine Arts. I have been a fan of Kate's work for many years. She has always exhibited an extraordinary sensitivity for form and space; her latest works continue this exploration with a variety of media.

MUST SEE PAINTINGS SHOWS: MARCH
There are dozens of strong painting exhibitions on view in March. In the interest of full disclosure, I not only publish New American Paintings, but I have a gallery in Boston as well. I am very fortunate to have an show of new paintings by Peter Opheim this month. Opheim focused his energies on abstraction for more than two decades, but in 2010 his work took a radical shift. While he begins each work with by creating of a small clay model, his paintings are anything but “still-lifes”; rather, they are extraordinary mediations on the medium of paint and the activity of painting.

MUST SEE PAINTINGS SHOWS: FEBRUARY
One of the best parts of my job is getting to see the careers of artists that we have worked with take off. Artists such as James Siena, Amy Cutler and Matthew Day Jackson were all featured in New American Paintings long before they reached the international spotlight. This month is not only an extraordinary month for the medium of painting at galleries around the country, it is a particularly strong month for New American Paintings’ alumni. No fewer than twenty artists featured in past, or upcoming editions, have their work on view in February. Two of my favorites, Summer Wheat and Benjamin Degen, will be featured in the soon to be released 2012 Northeast Edition (#98).
