The Masked Men and Women of Michelle Ramin
Michelle Ramin (NAP#99), composes colored pencil portraits of her friends and family. Sounds cute and cuddly at first, but not necessarily. Ramin’s portraits depict those close to her in great detail, all while they are wearing face masks. Creepy, yet personal; Scary, yet seductive, Ramin’s works are compositionally and conceptually challenging both on an individual and larger societal level.

More or Less Editorial Content In New American Paintings? (POLL)
We are always looking for suggestions and ways to improve New American Paintings. Since its inception, the printed magazine has always been about the artists selected for the publication, with little editorial content other than a juror essay. While we have no intention of ever changing its primary function, over the years we have added features like "Spotlight" and "Behind the Scenes," where we visit the studios, galleries, and minds of current contemporary painters and gallerists.

NAP #101 Sneak Peek
Within the next few weeks the Midwest issue of New American Paintings, #101, will be received by subscribers and newsstands across the country. Publisher/Editor, Steven Zevitas, remarks in his Editor's note, "I have a feeling that this issue of New American Paintings might be a bit provocative to a portion of our readership on account of the ways it pushes the idea of what constitutes a 'painting.'" Juror, Lisa D.

Northeast Juror: Nina Gara Bozicnik
We are pleased to announce that this year's Northeast Competition juror will be Nina Gara Bozicnik. Bozicnik is the Assistant Curator at the Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH, where she oversees Contemporary Connections, a project series featuring new work by early- and mid-career artists based in New England made in dialogue with the museum's collections, architecture, and institutional and regional histories. Bozicnik recently organized the exhibition Pretty Ugly: Deviant Materialism for the Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts, a multi-media show that explored the complexity of human desire and pleasure.

Revisiting NAP Issue #1
At the very least, our design teams have come a long way! The content, however, although receiving face-lifts every so often, has been the same. We have featured artists from all over the country in our magazine achieving greater exposure for their work. As it states in the first publisher's note, "...this publication can act as an open studio for artists across an entire region, whether they work in close proximity to other artists or work alone in the woods...This book represents the launching of a new idea in art publishing, a new opportunity for emerging artists, and a new market for collectors."
