Basquiat’s career encapsulated the kind of intensity and drama that art legends are made of. Within a period of five years he went from being a high school drop-out living on the streets of New York, to an established painter whose work was in high demand. Explaining Twombly’s work is a little like trying to explain Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. There is a stated formula and an equation that we are all readily familiar with but unless you can decode the terms of the equation you are lost. Similarly we decode Twombly’s brush because it is his tool. For Twombly his equation was that paint was like language: it described the world rather than simply made pictures of it. - Michael Klein, New York Contributor

Lichtenstein’s Landscapes in a Chinese Style at Gagosian

Roy Lichtenstein’s “Landscapes in a Chinese Style” at Gagosian Gallery’s 24th Street branch (exhibiting through April 7^th) have more to do with style than they do with Chinese landscapes. Lichtenstein’s series of paintings, collage, and sculpture, leading up to his death in 1997, is a very logical chapter in his stylistic approach to genre, which Gagosian has presented in a steady succession of shows.
