Abstract Dissection: Alex Olson at Lisa Cooley
Alex Olson dialogues with her paintings, building up layers of oil on linen, asserting with palette knives or opining with a window scraper. When she is satisfied with the exchange, she backs off, revealing an array like those comprising Palmist and Editor, her second solo exhibition at Lisa Cooley. Each is so imbued with the history of its creation that it's not quite accurate to call them “nonreferential”. Like the exhibition title alludes, we must read them. — Brian Fee, Austin contributor

40 Galleries You Should Know if You Love Paint
It is a simple truth that in any given month, if you added up all of the available space in commercial galleries around the country, the amount dedicated to painting would dwarf that of all other media. The list that I have compiled consists of 40 United States’ based galleries that have a proclivity for painting. That is not to say that painting is the only medium that these galleries show; indeed, most represent artists producing work in a range of media. All of them, however, have shown a particular interest in the medium over an extended period of time, and all have stables of artists that are at least 50% painters.

Michael Bauer at Lisa Cooley
Though he just moved to New York from Berlin, Michael Bauer's paintings have a thrifty quality that's native to the Lower East Side. Bauer is not exactly sparing with material, but he conveys a raggedy feeling through dull palette, erasure on canvas, and focused use of a tiny brush. The effect is a highly-detailed fog. Only rubbery silhouettes of heads and limbs identify these as tangles of elastic figures. - Whitney Kimball, NYC Contributor
