Artist Statement
Joel Swanson is an artist, designer, writer, and teacher of digital
art, media theory, and the history of design. Linguistic and
literary theory informs his work, which ranges from digital art
to sculpture and interactive installation. Thematically, his work
explores the technologies, materiality, and modes of signification
of language. Specifically, he revisits the questions posed by the
conceptual artists of the 1960s and ’70s in light of contemporary
digital technologies. He is particularly drawn to the complexities,
glitches, and quirks within linguistic systems, focusing his work
on the spaces where language breaks down.
