Christian Platt
My work is a labor-intensive journey. Each painting begins without a plan as I strive to stay open to how the work is guiding me. They are intense searches for a final expression, commonly taking months and sometimes years to reach a resolution. I respond to marks previously made, painting over and concealing them, building up the surface and leaving behind a shadow of the previous thought. Applying paint in small, thoughtful strokes, like footsteps or the remains of a moment, I observe as organic forms, cosmic patterns, doorways, frames, and shadows appear.
Paint is never removed from the surface, only covered and added to, which allows the paintings to develop unidirectionally with time and life as they unfold. There is no editing, only adapting and responding to what has come before. The labor of my search is left visible in the optically rich surface of the work, a trace of the journey undertaken to reach the end.
