My work reflects my interest in big picture, primordial questions about what it means to be human. At a time when climate change requires that we redefine the answer and reposition ourselves in relation to our changing environment, my stretched, mixed-media textile pieces visually fragment the landscape and explore the challenge of moving outside a human perspective to know and love nature. Stock photos and brightly-colored found fabric present idealized versions of the landscape—those removed from human impact. References to merit badges, created using machine embroidery, feature prominently as a human lens for viewing the environment and marking human ‘achievement’ in relation to the environment.

My work addresses the contrivance and simplification of man-made representations of nature and the innate performativity of our nature-loving society. Through anthropocentric representations of nature, I explore the ways that we attempt to access nature and, in the process, ultimately learn more about our limited human viewpoint.
