Artist Statement

I am interested in articulating the nuance and complexity of our interior worlds compared to those visible and exterior through oil painting. Using delicate and precise language, my work explores human conditions of love, loss, loneliness, and longing. Often via self-portraiture, my layered paintings study the relationships between individuals and identities—the ones society imposes upon us and those we create for ourselves. My practice is informed by personal experiences and reflections guided by my interests in psychology and Zen Buddhism. These readings and philosophies influence not only my practice but the way I navigate life as a whole. Through my work, I hope to create a visual translation of the intricacies of our fragile, yet resilient psyches as I seek to better understand myself and the world around me.
