My work is closely focused on my roots in the rural Midwest and the environments existing at the periphery that most people ignore. I am drawn to areas and structures that show character resulting from the history and memory of the people and ways of life that have shaped them. I am fascinated by the light that falls on these subjects, as well as its ability to illuminate or obscure and to create mood or emotional tone. Painting familiar yet unremarkable buildings at night gives me the opportunity to edit out extraneous information and provide the viewer with the essence of the place. The artistic language applied to slightly familiar yet hauntingly isolated areas permits me to transform the commonplace and make the insignificant significant.
