My paintings deal with traditionally opposed ideas of painting (abstraction co-existing with representation and landscape versus figure/ground relationships). In my recent work, painterly images of the “Love” sculpture are set into spaces that have been both physically and digitally abandoned. I have been using the icon in these discarded interior spaces as a way of injecting vitality with color and form, but also as a means of “branding” or “tagging” the space. Much in the way graffiti finds its way onto abandoned exteriors, these spaces have been tagged by Modernism.
