Artist Statement

Dissections of emotional spaces expressed through the representation of the human form, these paintings are an excavation of emotions; a way to communicate and interact with others and myself without words. They are both a search for identity and a rejection of boundaries. It is a continuous balance within each piece, confronting the physical and psychological. Colors bleed and flow to form these figures. They are barely contained by the edges of paper, expressing their active emotions through pigment, water, paint, and ribbons. They are fleshy figures lined up, cut out, embroidered and gilded.

The tiled, overlapping paper pieces push along the borders of each painting. The bright, saturated colors pool and flow up to the edges of the water enhancing the sharp whiteness of the paper. The cut paper pushes deeper into the picture plane while the ribbons and gilding creep into the viewer’s space creating a sense of tension. The display of flesh is at the same time clinical and sentimental.
