Artist Statement

Developed during a residency in Los Angeles, Measure is a series of graphite drawings that began as a conceptual exploration of space. Like paintings by the artist Peter Halley, these works physically locate the viewer. Where Halley relies on color relationships to create depth in an otherwise flat image, using the same simple geometric structures I challenge the limits of human observation through the materiality of the surface. Perception and light are integral to the image. While at first appearing solid black, the composition reveals itself when the viewer approaches it. As with my large-scale installation projects, this participation and willingness to look harder completes the work.
