Artist Statement
In my paintings, I manually rebuild a mechanical image that has been distorted and degraded through automation and transmission. My greatest hope is that my physical interaction leads to a reconnection with the primacy and energy of the original event portrayed. It is no accident that the majority of my subject matter is taken from archetypal characters and occurrences, whether historical or mythical, including King Kong, Evel Knievel, and Bruce Lee. These were, for better or worse, powerful symbols for a young boy growing up in the wake of the sexual revolution, in the post-Vietnam 1970s. My images are, in great part, a search for the remnants of masculine identity among the media icons of my generation.
