Artist Statement

For me, paintings are first and foremost things, beings even, not images. They carry weight, surface, and time. As I layer and excavate paint, marks accumulate, submerge, and return changed. Each painting emerges through this process of revision and transformation.

The paintings feature women and girls alongside scenes of daily life that are a bit askew – a girl holding a tiger cub, a yellow table with flowers and a barely visible animal peering at the viewer, a woman with a chicken tucked inside her winter coat. Facial expressions are subtle, relationships remain ambiguous and color interactions create shifting, atmospheric space. Pattern and clothing act as cultural markers, and forms are often larger than life. My work is rooted in an archive of sketchbook drawings, personal snapshots, and art historical sources.

The paintings create presence in the face of absence, and hold that presence close whether it’s a feeling, a gesture or a tiger. Ephemerality, cycles of time, and the act of seeing are currents in the work. Everything is in flux until it’s not.
