Artist Statement
Our culture is fascinated with things that are smooth and shiny,
from glossy surfboards and custom automobile paint jobs to slick
laptop computers. I explore this phenomenon by crafting objects
that present an inherent contradiction between what is discarded
and what is desired.
My family has been in the garbage collection business for over
seventy years. After spending over a decade working in the
industry myself, I began making paintings from debris, trash,
and recycling. In the spirit of alchemy, I transform these base
materials into precious objects.
Ultimately, the works take on a life of their own and become
solitary objects in space that exude a sense of both humor and
beauty.
