I attempt to represent a form of blankness in visual terms. Working within the constraints of a paradox, I invent a calligraphic shorthand of marks as a visual alphabet that negates itself. On surfaces of canvas or slate, brushstrokes resemble words but are illegible, and lists of nothing are blackened, yet the abstracted documents, presented as image, are still recognizable. Pen and paint-mark are conflated into a single gesture to denote a generalized memory of writing. It’s impossible to remember every signature signed or list made. What remains is a rough poetry of warped images assembled in our minds.
