Featured a whopping four times in New American Paintings (Editions #29, #41, #53, and #71), Peregrine Honig is no stranger to the spotlight. In fact, her work frequently deals with the idea of celebrity, using popular culture and her gritty surroundings in Kansas City, Missouri as creative fodder. We recently made plans to interview Honig for a Spotlight feature in Edition #89, and to our surprise we discovered she was selected as a contestant for Bravo’s reality television series, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. The following is an excerpt from her recent conversation with editor-at-large, Evan J. Garza. “After the show, just sort of returning to the real world, there’s a lot you have to get out of your system... Being under surveillance when you’re nervous is really hard,” she says laughing, “so [I’ve been] making these beautiful, layered, glossy, lacey pieces about having these super intense feelings and not having any real privacy.” "I feel like I’m sort of a social scientist, in a way, a sociologist," Honig says, "making this sort of ongoing dictionary of ideas about social structures and women and fashion.” The artist is preparing the vomiting works for a solo exhibition with Dwight Hackett Projects in Santa Fe in October. You can read the rest of her comments in the forthcoming Edition #89 of New American Paintings, hitting shelves in August!
