James Gillispie
I am interested in depicting the act of observation through abstraction. My paintings resist a passive pictorial space. They are the act of seeing, realized on linen. I use a system of hand drawn grids, which allow a shallow, illusionistic space. With the imperfections of the hand and the vibration of undiluted color, my paintings ungulate spatially. I think of color by way of luminance, as you would see on an L.E.D. screen or direct sunlight through a stained glass window. I fluctuate between painting form and painting flatness that is informed by the gestalt of my arms’ reach. I do not seek to achieve an end result with my painting; I hope to achieve a harmony, or simultaneity of these seemingly disparate elements.
