Brandon Shimmel
Using a selective economy of mark-making and formal
decisiveness, I construct minimal compositions that emphasize
objecthood and physicality. I am deeply invested in process,
material, and the presence a painting can command. I am
interested in formal oppositions and the tension created by
combining divergent components.
Integrating non-traditional painting materials through strategic
formal interventions, I produce painting-based objects that
accentuate texture, pattern, surface, color, and light. Showing
an acute attention to edge and materiality, the paintings are
articles of desire, posturing visually seductive indulgence. I am
attracted to intelligently crafted and sophisticatedly designed
objects, images, and environments. It is through this lens that
I cultivate my own visual sensibilities, creating objects that
project a similar energy.
