Artist Statement
My body of work combines narratives and symbols from both Chinese and Western European traditions with personal photography to examine archetypal aspects of human fear and desire. My process often starts with simple charcoal drawings, either in a sketchbook or on larger sheets of paper, and the composition is then transferred to canvas, often larger than my body. The charcoal drawings and collages are loose and raw conceptual explorations for the final paintings, while the oil paintings bring in more detail and psychological tension through the symbolic use of color. Much of my recent work examines mythology, folkloric tales, and iconic images, posing questions about inherited aesthetic and gendered norms. In particular, I focus on female and diasporic perspectives and how the body shapes our experiences, challenging the stability of self-image in both private and public spaces.
