I want the formal elements to misbehave so the paintings can offer a more challenging sort of pleasure. To suggest holes in apparently unyielding rational systems is to forward the hopeful implication that any system is malleable. In this work, I find freedom in self-imposed limitations and the excitement for me is to see how different each painting can be using the limited vocabulary of a single, simple shape. It is a repeated shape, but the accumulation of imperfections, slow moves, and small changes brings satisfying surprises.
