I have spent years organizing paintings in my mind, contemplating
the forms that paint inhabits. I believe that representation
and abstraction flow in and out of the same well, and should
not be perceived as mutually exclusive. In the portrait works,
the representation of costume and narrative is abstraction
personified. The raw content of my work stems from figuring
the unique stations of human character, and it ties together
the variations in media and style that I employ. The portrait, the
word, the document, the field all reflect the complicated beauty
of being, the fullness of which I do not simply measure in a single
tradition or technique.
