Sam Jones
Sometimes my imagery comes from looking at and thinking
about other paintings, and sometimes it comes from popular
culture. But usually I do not know where it comes from, as it often
develops through an unconscious, automatic process of drawing.
I use and appropriate imagery—cartoonish faces, boxing gloves,
high-heeled shoes, guns with smoke puffs, letters, comic-book
action words, butts, and anthropomorphized abstract forms—that
provides the viewer with an open terrain for understanding the
work’s meaning. That way, I can have a personal engagement
with the work while making it, and the viewer can have her or his
own experience of it while viewing it.
