I have found that a painting only sits right when I choose to do
the vulnerable rather than the expected thing. I like to explore
the space where my impulses lead me down an unexpected
path. The paintings seem to talk back when I end up surprising
myself. Anytime I think I know what I’m doing, or have something
figured out, the thing ends up playing a joke on me. I work on
multiple canvases at once, using many materials and methods to
explore different motifs. I settle on one motif at a time to use as
an anchor within a single body of work, and from there explore
many possibilities. Within that single framework, another motif
will emerge that I will elaborate on or act on in direct opposition
in the next body of work.
