Artist Statement
The works incorporate shredded media from my personal archives-tax returns, mortgage documents, credit card statements and art periodicals. I consider the works to be self-portraits-direct examples of how documents are generated in relation to individual identity. The finished works have a visual similarity to abstract expressionist painting, but these works are diametrically opposed to the treatise of abstract expressionism. Rather than being a direct expression of the artist's inner life and/or emotion, these works are a documentation of an artists' outer life, the life that society and government defines as a person's identity through the data created during a lifetime. Subtle color changes exist in all the documents. Monthly periodicals change colors seasonally, while documents from mortgage and credit card companies make subtle ink changes throughout the life of the agreements.
