Artist Statement

I hope to document the most powerful living force on earth—humankind—by painting its derelict superstructures. These stricken, decaying ships and power plants, former symbols of manmade beauty, pleasure, and power, were constructed during a period in recent history when technology and design were still united.

I have a great affection for the luxury liners of the mid-twentieth century. In these floating palaces I may have found a visual metaphor for Earth herself. These painful paintings, however beautiful, strive to speak visually of the consistent coexistence of humanity’s triumphs, tragedies, and hopes.
