I consider other people’s creations, most recently photos posted
to social media platforms, and how I can inhabit them as a painter.
Images I select are compelling to me for their both their narrative
and formal possibilities.
I build up the surface of the canvas with acrylic medium to
interfere with my attempts at capturing the photo faithfully. The
paint runs interference and creates something like a painterly
hand in the finished piece.
Building the paint into a relief also serves to animate the photo;
elements cast their own shadows and lead to a reading in a
re-photograph that is distinct from its experience in the space of
a gallery.
