My paintings are about the act of looking and the construction
of a viewing experience. I am interested in cultivating the
viewer’s awareness of shifting points of view in relation to both
the paintings as objects in space and the way they reference the
reflective surfaces and dizzying viewpoints that are hallmarks
of twenty-first century museum architecture.
Through the process of painting I interpret my experience of
museums. Gesture, color, and strong light allow me to further
romanticize the contemporary museum as a place that courts
sublime spectacle. At the same time, I want to remind the viewer
of concrete, individual acts of work: I embed imagery of individual
people building, drawing, and serving, and let my marks show on
the surface of the canvas.
