My Tumblers series stems from a desire to shed the somewhat weighty content of previous work and delve into a purely playful process, leaving the background an empty space where much can happen.

The process began with my painting on paper a bunch of tiny images, each roughly an inch in size, of me tumbling about. I then cut the figures out, building a small pile to be arranged and assembled. With a sense of play, I began moving the little guys around, creating different interactions: wrestling, teasing, crawling all over each other, and watching from the side. Full of both tenderness and aggression, these paintings create a mass of Cobis full of joy and curiosity.
