Because I have always thought of painting as an alternative to writing, if not its opposite, the preparation of an artist’s statement feels like an awkward pairing. Do writers offer paintings describing their work? I think not.

I paint because I need to. Mentally, my process feels like emptying an attic, when the attic is so crowded with both treasures and junk that it would crush the rest of the house if I didn’t pull things out and into the light of day. Physically, I should say, the process of painting is lot easier.
