This series of paintings is based on photographs taken while driving across the country. I am concentrating on places that are normally glimpsed at in passing, then instantly disregarded. Having grown up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, I find myself mesmerized by generic architecture and landscapes that are forever repeating. There is a peaceful familiarity in this setting that can also appear soulless and dismal. When painting, I am simplifying and exaggerating aspects of the image to capture both the serene and vacant feelings that this scenery can present.
