Artist Statement
My recent work addresses a promise I made to my mother to take care of my mentally disabled sister at her death. For six years, I have cared for my mentally disabled sister, Renee. She is 51 years old, but has the mindset of a second grader. Renee also has epilepsy. My work addresses the difficulties of caring for someone who is mentally disabled. It also celebrates the beauty of seeing the world through Renee’s eyes. I promised my mother that I would take care of my sister as if she were my own child. I never thought that my mother would die, and I had no idea what caring for Renee would entail.
